The Cannes Film Festival has its origins in 1932 when the first international film festival was held in Venice. In those days top movie honors inevitably were awarded to movies made in Germany or Italy due to their influence, even though movies from other countries deserved and often were better. This partisan attitude of the Venice film awards led to the creation of the Cannes film festival.
